The main building is located on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan at the edge of Central Park and is part of New York’s famous Museum Mile. The institute was opened in 1872 as a universal museum, claiming comprehensiveness in its fields and epochs of art collection, and is currently run by cultural manager Max Hollein from Vienna. The full collection includes more than three million works, and exhibitions are presented throughout more than 130,000 m² of space. In 2016, the museum saw 7,006,859 visitors, making it the second most visited art museum in the world.

Numerous pieces made by the Lobmeyr company can be found in the Met collection of European decorative arts, including Josef Hoffmann’s Patrician series and Oswald Haerdtl’s Ambassador series, along with richly decorated pieces such as Vally Wieselthier’s Queen of Sheba vase from 1924.
