The new Musikverein building was built in 1867–1870 by Theophil Hansen, one of the most renowned architects of the Ringstrasse era. This is the home of the Vienna Philharmonic and is famous for, among other things, the annual broadcast of the New Year’s Concert in the Golden Hall, a concert hall with unrivalled acoustics. In 1920, Lobmeyr installed eight large, elegant chandeliers here in a simple “sack and tent” style. The challenge at the time was to light Hansen’s unique ceiling ornamentation without outshining it.
