The “Cologne chandelier”, which got its nickname because Josef Hoffmann designed it for the 1914 Cologne Werkbund exhibition, is a milestone in chandelier design. In 1992, we created one of the largest versions of this chandelier model to date, for the Hotel New Otani in Makuhari: more than 150 centimetres across and over two metres tall. Even the cast floral decorations designed by Hoffmann had to be custom-made due to the size: Only 10 centimetres wide in the original version, the cast elements for the main chandelier ring measure 25 centimetres in this larger version. Several other original design elements were changed, partly to accommodate the tremendous size, but also to imbue the design with a touch of modernity suited to the early 1990s.
