LOBMEYR Flagship Store

Kärntner Straße 26, 1010 Vienna

The Viennese affectionately call the business “Der Lobmeyr”, holding up the institution as an integral part of Vienna. Ludwig Lobmeyr rented the Kärntner Strasse 26 shop, in a newly built commercial and residential building, at the recommendation of his friend Otto Wagner in 1895. Lobmeyr had previously owned their own office building on the corner of Weihburggasse, but it had been demolished only shortly before at the behest of the emperor, who ordered the entire length of Kärntner Strasse to be widened, making it the most important boulevard in the city centre.

The new, much larger business premises extended over three floors, with an atrium connecting the galleries. Ludwig himself also moved into a spacious apartment there, which he had furnished by Theophil Hansen and where his famous “gentlemen’s evenings” took place once a week. The complex of buildings was planned by architect Alois Wurm von Arnkreuz, a master of late Historicism. The unmistakable Lobmeyr storefront is probably also from his drafting pen, and perhaps also the shop’s interior. After being restored and redesigned by architects Hubmann.Vass from 2021 to 2023, the interior once again shines in all its original splendour.

Lobmeyr’s own range of glassware, chandeliers, and mirrors is supplemented here with a fascinating variety of select table decor, furnishings, and interesting finds. Here, you can trace the work of the designers who have worked for Lobmeyr over the years, from glass to porcelain and silver and all the way to lighting. The second upper floor showcases the family collection of historic Lobmeyr glasses. Customers often describe the store as a place of rest from the hustle and bustle of downtown Vienna, a museum where the exhibits can be purchased and enjoyed at home.
