It began with the statement that there are no hierarchies in the living world, but that everything is connected and equally important.

The work refers to a quote by quantum physicist David Bohm:

“The notion of a separate organism is clearly an abstraction … Underlying all this is unbroken wholeness, even though our civilisation has developed in such a way as to strongly emphasise the separation into parts.”

The bull, a symbol of primal power, is born from the delicate lily, lending it an unexpected tenderness. Opposite stands the swallow, embodying courage and absolute dynamism through its lightness.

Details

Master engraver Edmond Suciu invested over 200 hours in the execution of this work. Menschhorn visited him regularly; details were developed collaboratively and carefully coordinated by Lobmeyr.

It is always remarkable to see what human creativity and craftsmanship can produce from glass — a material that is, at its core, molten sand. This work stands within the long tradition of precious Lobmeyr copperplate engravings.

What makes this ancient technique so fascinating is the depth and variety of structures that can be drawn from the material. Lobmeyr has always been deeply inspired by the exquisite rock crystal works of the Habsburgs’ Kunstkammer.
