About us
J. & L. Lobmeyr was founded in Vienna in 1823 by Joseph Lobmeyr—exactly 200 years ago. We quickly became purveyor to the Imperial Court. A love of the material, an emotional relationship to the product, and personal commitment has defined each generation. Lobmeyr glasses are still blown, cut, engraved, and polished entirely by hand. All of our lighting products are manufactured at our atelier workshops in the heart of Vienna. The Lobmeyr company focuses on a contemporary interpretation of glass and light, and never stops cultivating its heritage. The old inspires the new, and traditional knowledge facilitates innovation. Together with designers like Josef Hoffmann and Adolf Loos in the past, and today Ted Muehling, formafantasma, and Michael Anastassiades among others, we create fine handmade crystal and chandeliers that are appreciated by connoisseurs all over the world.

3 glasses from Lobmeyr in deep focus.
Within most drawings, everything is generally depicted “in focus”. For this project, I was inspired by the idea of applying this principle of a deep, infinite focus also to a photograph. To imagine Photography not being an extension to the human eye, but to the human mind, the mind’s perception when producing a drawing.
In Photography, this technique is called “focus stacking”, and many smartphones have that function already built in. Nevertheless, it has limitations when applied to photographs, for example when showing reflections seen in and through a glass, with textures covering extreme distances, particularly if seen through the many curves of glasses with such detail in high resolution. I produced these photographs all manually. In traditional photography, no lens or camera technique would ever allow for an image with such a deep, crisp focus.

Identical shape, identical height - five individual glasses.
In mouth-blown glass production, the goblet is blown into a predetermined wooden mould, while the stem is shaped freely. The design plays with this human influence. All the glasses are blown into the same wooden mould and cut off at the same height after the different lengths of stem have been attached. This results in five different glasses that form a harmonious ensemble.
