About us
J. & L. Lobmeyr was founded in Vienna in 1823 by Joseph Lobmeyr—over 200 years ago. We quickly became purveyor to the Imperial Court. A love of the material, an emotional relationship to the product, and personal commitment has defined each generation. Lobmeyr glasses are still blown, cut, engraved, and polished entirely by hand. All of our lighting products are manufactured at our atelier workshops in the heart of Vienna. The Lobmeyr company focuses on a contemporary interpretation of glass and light, and never stops cultivating its heritage. The old inspires the new, and traditional knowledge facilitates innovation. Together with designers like Josef Hoffmann and Adolf Loos in the past, and today Ted Muehling, formafantasma, and Michael Anastassiades among others, we create fine handmade crystal and chandeliers that are appreciated by connoisseurs all over the world.

Josef Hoffmann | 6. So many of Josef Hoffmann’s projects featured his favourite motif, the square, that he was nicknamed “Square Hoffmann”. One of the best known – and most elegant – examples was this, the Series B (the B is short for Bronzit) set of a carafe and glasses that he designed in 1912 for J. & L. Lobmeyr, the venerable Viennese crystal maker.

Seemingly simple in shape, and unmistakably modern, Series B typifies Hoffmann’s work both stylistically and in terms of its technical ingenuity. Lobmeyr’s skilled artisans blew the glass into bespoke beechwood moulds to make it as slender as possible, and etched the exterior with this fine geometric pattern. The Series B was one of the star products to be launched at the 1914 Werkbund Exhibition in Cologne, and has sold steadily ever since as a model of Hoffmann’s fusion of modernity with Viennese craft traditions.

Thank you very much Leonid Rath for showing us the @lobmeyr treasures in Vienna! 200 years of glas history and six family generations - our visit with the students of @dieangewandte @angewandte_id last Friday was a discovery-tour from Josef Hofmann and Adolf Loos and from contemporary designers as @polka_designstudio and @sebastianherkner. All about glass and crafts!
