Josef Lobmeyr sen., 1846

Starting with the 175th anniversary of our company a series of unique collectibles for the admirers of Lobmeyr crystal came into being.

The piece of this year is unique in two ways. On the one hand, we decided to look back into our history and reedit an old design for the first time, instead of creating an new one. And we have evidence that this item is the first “Lobmeyr-design” in our history. For the inspiration to do so we have to thank Dr. Waltraud Neuwirth, the retired curator for glass and porcelain at the Vienna Museum of Applied Arts. She wrote and edited a wonderful book “Surpassing the Beauty of Rock Crystal” (orig.: “Schöner als Bergkristall”) covering her latest research on our company’s archives. There she found early designs for a series of tumblers originating from the company’s founder Josef Lobmeyr sen. done in 1846. Other than today where the Lobmeyr range only consists of own designs the whole thing started as a “civic Glazier and merchant in glass” in a “brilliantly assorted glass warehouse”.
A “Biedermeier” Beaker therefore marks a most important turning point in Lobmeyr´s history from a merchant in glass to an editor in glass. The second fact that makes this year’s collectible …a “Biedermeier” Beaker… after the design of Josef Lobmeyr sen unique is it’s precious way of manufacturing. The colourful piece is made from pale gold-ruby glass with a double overlay in white and cobalt blue. The up to date-feeling of the geometric pattern is created by partly cutting through the colour overlays. A wonderful piece of craftsmen’s mastership and, like the other collectibles, signed and dated, in a singular edition of 179 pieces, coming in a representative gift-box.
