A small star as a tribute to its big brother
The world-renowned chandeliers we meticulously crafted in 1966 for the entrance hall and auditorium of the Metropolitan Opera in New York have become true icons of lighting design.
During their restoration in 2008, approximately 1,000 individual chandelier components—known as Sputnik elements—once again passed through our hands.
In this process, we gained a renewed appreciation for the captivating beauty of these components as standalone pieces. Inspired by this, our craftsmen conceived the idea of experimenting with the Sputnik elements to create unique, smaller light fixtures and started tinkering.
The versatile lighting design resembles a Metropolitan chandelier in miniature form. It can be mounted individually, repurposed as a table lamp, or even placed directly on the floor for a striking effect.
Almost any size and shape, ranging from squares and rectangles to flowing curves and whimsical twist, can be realised.
When paired with a Met chandelier, it can be installed as a small galaxy or grouped into clusters of Sputnik elements. On a mirrored back panel, a half Sputnik element creates the perfect wall light, with the reflective surface giving the mesmerizing illusion of an endlessly cascading height.
The sputnik design is available as a table lamp on a tripod, as pendant or as a wall lamp with a mirror back plate.
As a larger installation we can combine multiple elements in various sizes on a custom mirror ceiling plate.
The mini-Sputniks are illuminated with energy-efficient low-voltage halogen bulbs and are offered in two variants with 6 or 9 lights. They are suspended on freely swinging brass rods, interspersed with unlit Sputnik elements—just like the chandeliers—mirroring the design of the chandeliers.
The brass ceiling mirror, finished with a high-quality nickel coating, serves both as a mounting frame for ceiling installation and as housing for the electrical components.
“Small changes can ultimately lead to great results”—a quote that perfectly embodies the essence of our Sputnik model.
The Met chandelier is not only inseparably tied to LOBMEYR but also serves as inspiration for a range of innovative design variations. The “Metropolitan Mini-Sputnik” draws from Hans Harald Rath’s iconic Met-chandelier design.
Our small and large chandeliers crafted from Sputnik elements stand as landmark projects of their era. Even 60 years later, this visionary design – inspired by the imagery of distant galaxies – retains its timeless allure and radiant brilliance.
