The aesthetic universe of the buzzing 1960ies was heavily influenced by classic Hollywood B-Movies like the Flying Saucer.
Their playful, comedic spirit inspired the Vienna based design duo KIM+HEEP to create this charming series of UFOs. Not the kitschy, over-edited screen versions, but the captivating props and mock-ups that leave a lasting impression. With their UFO series the designers evoke precisely the lost, innocent vision of the future. Also to remind us of our everlasting remaining dream: floating in space.
At first glance, there seemed little connection between our handcrafted traditions and the world of aliens or spaceships. But KIM+HEEP understood it right away: how many spaceships have ever been mass-produced?
Real-life spacecraft and probes are always the result of highly skilled artisans, creating bespoke, high-quality works. At LOBMEYR, we simply add a touch of design.
Each „flying object“ has a special element that plays the lead, be it Art Noveau drops or antennas citing the MET-chandelier.
So in orbit and in Vienna every piece is unique. By differently arranging glass and brass, each chandelier has ist own lighting properites.
All of our UFOs „Stanley“, „Nyota“, „Ellen“ and „Orson“ are tailormade in various finishes like leaf-gold or polished brass finish. We only use durable, and high-quality lead-free crystal. Perfectly fit for any space adventures.
LOBMEYR is linked to space travel not only by its tradition of innovation. Our famous MET-chandelier design was also inspired by distant galaxies right at the height of the space age.
The Big Bang Theory was postulated when Hans Harald Rath came up with his milestone design of the galaxy-like chandeliers for the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1966.
