LOBMEYR has been matched for Wallpaper* Handmade this year with Sebastian Herkner. The general topic of the prototype show is "Ritual".
Herkner made use of the characteristics of the glass, its possibility of transparency and possibility of sophistication to celebrate the power of Nature in its barely known but indispensable facets. He designed glass domes that both preserve and highlight seeds from crop wild relative plants endangered by climate change (wheat, peanut, cowpea, potato, oat). By putting the seed on a socle like a precious stone, he wants the visitor to reflect on what is actually important and even necessary. The project aims to question the value of something, even if it looks small and ordinary.
Craftsmanship is necessary to realize the importance of the materials we extract from our environment, to understand them and all the parameters it needs to exist.Through the special caring and the high manufacturing, we can learn to respect those materials.
The jars consist of a massive base and a fine, exactly fitting lid. Each piece is hand-blown, hand-cut and polished and engraved. The seeds are presented on tiny gilt brass tables.
